Trip to a Gurdwara

On the 28th February, Year 5 and 6 went on a trip to a Gurdwara (a Sikh temple). The upper KS2 students are studying Sikhism in R.E. (religious education). Before the excited students set off, the teachers had to check our lunches to make sure we didn't have meat, fish or eggs as many Sikhs are vegetarian and we wanted to be respectful whilst at the Gurdwara. As we came in we had to take off our shoes and cover our heads with a head scarf.

At the temple, the intrigued students listened to an interesting presentation about how the religion started and what the holy book is called. We learnt all about the Sikh holy book (the Guru Granth Sahib) and how it is kept on a throne during the day and then carried to ‘bed’ with a bejewelled cover like a duvet at the end of the day.  After the presentation, we had dahl and rice (dahl is like a sauce made from lentils). As we ate the delicious food we sat on a strip of carpet. All the food was for free and some people even had 4 portions. We were shown around by a kind man called Bhupinder Singh (we learnt that Singh is the surname given to boys and means lion, and Kaur is the surname given to girls and means prince). It was a very interesting day and we learnt a lot.
